Engineering Steels
General structural and engineering steels with good machinability, widely used for machine elements that need basic mechanical strength.

Properties
Engineering steels are unalloyed and low-alloy steels used in general machine building. They have good machinability and weldability. Their response to heat treatment depends on carbon content: medium-carbon grades can be hardened, while low-carbon structural steels do not gain much hardness by quenching.
Typical grades
- C35, C45 (medium carbon; suitable for induction hardening and quenching and tempering)
- S235JR, S275JR, S355J2 (St37, St44, St52; low-carbon structural steels)
Applications
Shafts, pins, flanges, brackets, welded structures, frames and housings, and general machine elements.
Heat treatment notes
On medium-carbon engineering steels, wearing areas can be induction hardened or the whole part quenched and tempered. On low-carbon structural steels the aim is to refine the structure rather than to harden: normalising after forging, rolling or welding makes the structure uniform, and stress relieving reduces later dimensional changes.
