Case-Hardening Steels

Low-carbon (about 0.10–0.25%) unalloyed and low-alloy steels that gain a hard, wear-resistant surface and a tough core through carburising and hardening.

Case-Hardening Steels

Properties

The low-carbon core of case-hardening steels stays tough after hardening. When carbon is diffused into the surface and the part is quenched, the surface reaches high hardness. The result is a wear-resistant surface over a core that withstands impact and fatigue.

Typical grades

  • C15, 16MnCr5, 20MnCr5
  • 20NiCrMo2-2 (8620)
  • 18CrNiMo7-6

Applications

Gears, gearbox and gear shafts, pinions, cam and piston pins, sprockets.

Heat treatment notes

The required case depth should be stated on the drawing. Areas that must not be carburised can be masked with a protective coating. Distortion after heat treatment is corrected by straightening, and precise dimensions are finished by grinding.

Which processes for this steel?
